Roadways & Embankments
Build the grade without the weight.
Enviro-Rock is a lightweight foam glass aggregate used beneath roadway systems and within embankments where reducing loading on weak or compressible soils is important. At approximately 200–240 kg/m³, it can replace heavier conventional fill while providing a stable, free-draining granular layer within the roadway or embankment system.
Key Uses
- Lightweight fill beneath roadway systems
- Road embankments and grade raises
- Road construction over weak or compressible soils
- Settlement-sensitive roadway areas
- Road widening and embankment expansion
- Deep-fill roadway construction
- Free-draining structural fill zones
- Frost-sensitive transportation applications
Overview
Roadway embankments and grade raises can introduce substantial surcharge onto weak or compressible native soils. As fill depth increases, the weight of conventional aggregate can contribute to settlement and stability concerns before traffic loading is even considered.
Enviro-Rock allows designers to build required elevation with significantly less fill weight. It can be incorporated beneath conventional roadway base materials or within an embankment, typically separated from surrounding soils with geotextile as required by the project design. Its low density reduces loading on the underlying ground while maintaining a stable, free-draining granular fill layer.

Key Performance Considerations
Reduced Ground Loading
Low unit weight substantially reduces embankment dead load and the additional stress imposed on weak or compressible underlying soils.
Compressive Performance
Tested compressive performance supports use as engineered lightweight fill within roadway and embankment assemblies.
Freeze-Thaw Durability
Demonstrated resistance to freeze-thaw exposure supports use in roadway and embankment applications subject to seasonal freezing conditions.
