Bridge Approaches & Abutments
Reduce loading at the transition.
Enviro-Rock is a lightweight foam glass aggregate used within bridge approaches and behind abutments where settlement control and reduced loading are important. At approximately 200–240 kg/m³, it can replace heavier conventional fill to reduce surcharge on underlying soils and foundations while providing a free-draining granular fill zone adjacent to the structure.
Key Uses
- Bridge approach fills
- Backfill behind bridge abutments
- Approach slabs over weak or compressible soils
- Settlement-sensitive bridge transitions
- Lightweight fill adjacent to foundations
- Grade raises near bridge structures
- Free-draining fill behind abutments and wing walls
- Frost-sensitive transportation applications
Overview
Bridge approaches are particularly sensitive to differential settlement because the bridge structure and the adjoining roadway often respond differently to loading and ground conditions. Conventional approach fill can place significant additional surcharge on weak soils and on the foundation system near the abutment.
Enviro-Rock reduces the weight of the approach and backfill zone, helping lower stress on the underlying soils and adjacent structures. Its open granular structure also provides drainage behind abutments and within the approach fill, while its freeze-thaw resistance supports use in transportation assemblies exposed to seasonal frost conditions.

Key Performance Considerations
Reduced Approach Loading
Low unit weight reduces the dead load of approach fill and the additional stress imposed on weak or compressible soils near the bridge transition.
Frost Resistance
Resistance to freeze-thaw exposure supports reliable performance in bridge approach zones subject to seasonal freezing and changing ground conditions.
Durability & Longevity
The stable glass structure resists decay, moisture damage, and biological breakdown, supporting long-term performance within permanent bridge infrastructure.
